Sveriges Riksdag
Sveriges Riksdag is the Swedish Parliament. It is the national assembly that wields the legislative power in thecountry. It has only one chamber and has 349 parliamentary members. The Riksdag is situated on the Helgeanscholmen island in Stockholm.
The term in Swedish can be translated as “Meeting of the Realm” or “Diet of the Realm”. The riksdag is organized through general elections every four years. The 349 parliament members are chosen through popular vote on a proportionate representation basis. The elections usually take place during the third Sunday of September.
According to the Swedish constitution the parliament has the legislative power in the state. It can create and pass laws, appoint a government and amend the constitution. There are two differences in Swedish practices compared to other similar countries. First, Sweden is a constitutional monarchy with the king as head of state. Contrary to general practice, not the King but the Speaker of the Riksdag appoints the new government. Second, the regular parliament, and not other special governing body, makes changes to the constitution. In order for such change to come into effect in musty be supported by two successive parliaments with elections in between.
Sweden is often pointed as an example of functional and social democracy. The country has clearly defined political parties. In practice for many years now no single party has managed to accumulate more than 50% in order to form independent government. As a result Swedish political parties have had to form consensus governments that often incorporate opposing political parties.
Both sides of the political specter are present in Swedish political life. There are socialist and non-socialist parties. Currently, the state is governed by the Social Democratic Party with 130 seats who are in coalition with the Moderate party with 97 seats. The rest are spread among 5 other political parties with on average 20 seats each. The current prime minister is Fredrick Reinfeldt from the Moderate Party. The current government was elected in 2006. New elections will be held in September 2010.
